The 2023 SAIL Summit for AI Institutes Leadership took place from October 23 to 26, 2023, at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center in Atlanta, GA. Hosted by the AI Institutes Virtual Organization (AIVO), this four-day event started with a hybrid Workshop on "Institute Outreach and Communications."
The workshop featured speakers Breon Martin, Georgia Tech's AI Research Communications Manager and Director of Communications for AI-CARING, AI-ALOE, and AI4OPT, as well as Alex Kirkpatrick, a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Ginger Welsh, Outreach and Engagement Manager at AIVO and Communications and Marketing Coordinator at AIVO and AIFS. Phong Duong, a Graphic Designer at AIFS, also gave a rundown of what to look for and creating a logo.
The workshop aimed to explore how AI institutes effectively communicate their integration of AI technology into various fields and convey these messages to diverse audiences. Key topics covered included social media techniques, media training, media outreach, newsletters, and website content creation. The goal was to equip institutes with the tools and knowledge to convey their research and ideas effectively to different audiences.
On Day 1 of the conference, Jim Donlon, Program Director at NSF, Michael Littman, Division Director at NSF, and Steve Thomson, National Program Leader at USDA, provided welcoming remarks. Throughout the week, the event featured insights from industry leaders, including Dana Rao, General Counsel, Chief Trust Officer, and Executive Vice President, Legal, Security, and Policy at Adobe, who discussed AI's impact on society. Leaders from AI4OPT participated in panel discussions, engaging with members of congress, workshops, with AI4OPT Project Manager Kevin Dalmeijer featured in the Project Management Best Practices Workshop, and Pascal Van Hentenryck, AI4OPT Director, along with Holly Mayton of John Deere and Sean Warnick from the Department of Homeland Security, presented a workshop on Partnership Strategies.
The summit concluded with the AI Institutes Expo and Engagement Showcase, where all 25 NSF supported AI institutes showcased their cutting-edge AI research to the Georgia Tech community and the public including the Women Inspired in Life and Leadership (HerWILL) Founder and CEO, Farhana Hasan and her team.
Each participant discussing the current state of AI applications in various fields. The institutes held exhibits from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by a keynote address from Angel Cabrera, President of the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Three-panel discussions took place on the Showcase Stage, covering topics related to AI, Education, and Workforce Development, AI in Agriculture, Digital Agriculture, and Health, as well as Generative AI and Real-World Applications.
