With President Biden’s Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence, Office of Management and Budget guidance on government use of AI, voluntary commitments from AI companies, and deep engagement with countries around the world, the Biden-Harris Administration has taken important actions to protect and benefit all Americans and to lead the global community.
On Thursday, Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy Arati Prabhakar convened leaders from across government, congress, nonprofits, and industry to project visions for transformative national capabilities—examples of the big advances that could be realized with AI.
- Wade Shen, Director for Proactive Health at ARPA-H, discussed using AI to develop new medicines for seemingly intractable diseases in months rather than decades.
- Nate Jones, Commissioner at the National Center for Special Education Research, discussed using individualized learning to help every teacher help every student achieve their own American dream.
- Michael Morgan, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Environmental Observation and Prediction at NOAA, discussed using AI to develop weather forecasts that save lives and protect property with neighborhood-level, longer lead projections that people across the country can count on.
- Evelyn Wang, Director of ARPA-E, discussed using AI to develop flexible, reliable electrical grids that can meet our growing needs and further accelerate clean energy deployment.
- Dana Weinstein, Principal Assistant Director for Industrial Innovation and Special Advisor for CHIPS R&D at OSTP, discussed a vision to develop new high-performance, sustainable materials in years rather than decades for globally competitive semiconductor manufacturing.
- Ben Levine, Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Department of Transportation, discussed using AI for transportation projects in every region of the country that save lives and keep America moving.
- Mo Earley, Portfolio Lead for Federal High Impact Service Providers at the Office of Management and Budget, discussed using AI to provide government services that reach all Americans right when they need them while rigorously protecting privacy.
