Professor Dorit S. Hochbaum, a leading figure in optimization research from the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (Berkeley IEOR) at UC Berkeley, has been honored with the 2024 Khachiyan Prize by the INFORMS Optimization Society for her lifetime achievements in the field of optimization. Her extensive contributions include groundbreaking work in the design and analysis of algorithms, which have had significant applications across various domains such as data mining, image segmentation, and machine learning.
The Khachiyan Prize, presented annually to individuals or teams for sustained scholarly impact in optimization, recognizes Professor Hochbaum’s innovative use of combinatorial algorithms in data mining, image segmentation, and her research in neuroscience. Among her notable achievements is the development of the PseudoFlow algorithm for the maximum flow problem and her contributions to machine learning, particularly in recognizing bias in labeled data and enhancing experimental design methods.
Professor Hochbaum’s impressive body of work spans over 190 research papers published in leading journals, such as Operations Research, Management Science, and Theoretical Computer Science. She has mentored numerous Ph.D. students who have gone on to make significant contributions in the field. In addition to the Khachiyan Prize, her accolades include an honorary Doctorate of Sciences from the University of Copenhagen, the 2011 INFORMS Computing Society Prize, and fellowships from INFORMS and the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).
As a member of AI4OPT's Ethical AI team, Professor Hochbaum continues to drive forward innovative research that blends optimization with the ethical considerations of artificial intelligence. Her expertise will be invaluable as AI4OPT addresses the challenges of AI development in a responsible and sustainable manner.
